So, Dragons do Exist?
Mythologies help us to find meaning in the senseless, and wonder in the unknown, in this work Marisol uses the image of the komodo dragon to negotiate the interaction between our need for hopes and illusions, myths and dreams that allow us to face the unknown with wonder, the cognizance it takes to make the right choices and diligence to execute and follow through on them. The reality of the Komodo dragon is that of a living dinosaur they are massive, exotic creatures however compared to images of fire breathing, winged beasts as conjured by their name they can’t help but disappoint. We constantly attempt to strike a balance between the dualities in our existence, hope and resignation, joy and suffering, dreams and reality, mythos and logos, in Marisol Rendon’s installation “So, Dragons do Exist?” we are presented with a rare opportunity to find that balance in a quiet moment of empathy and contemplation.
